Falls are one of the leading causes of injury for adults, but many can be prevented with the right strategies. In this blog, our occupational therapists share practical tips for falls prevention so you can stay safe, confident, and independent at home and in your community.

Why Falls Prevention is Important

Did you know that one in three Australians over the age of 65 experience a fall each year? Falls can cause injuries that lead to loss of mobility, reduced confidence, and a decline in independence. But with the right strategies in place, most falls are preventable.

Occupational therapy focuses on identifying risks in your daily environment and helping you stay active and safe. Preventing falls means more than avoiding injury—it’s about maintaining your freedom and quality of life.

Common Risk Factors for Falls

  • Poor lighting inside or outside the home

  • Cluttered pathways or loose rugs

  • Slippery bathroom floors

  • Rushing to answer the phone or door

  • Poor balance, muscle weakness, or reduced mobility

  • Medications that cause dizziness or drowsiness

Top Occupational Therapy Tips for Falls Prevention

  1. Create a Safe Home Environment

    • Remove clutter, cords, or loose rugs that could cause trips.

    • Install non-slip mats in the bathroom and kitchen.

    • Add grab rails in bathrooms and along hallways if needed.

  2. Improve Lighting

    • Ensure hallways, stairs, and entrances are well-lit.

    • Use night lights in bathrooms and bedrooms.

    • Consider motion-sensor lights for added safety.

  3. Stay Active & Build Strength

    • Engage in gentle exercises such as walking, yoga, or tai chi.

    • Work with an OT or physiotherapist to improve balance and strength.

    • Use resistance bands or light weights at home to maintain muscle health.

  4. Wear the Right Footwear

    • Choose non-slip, supportive shoes.

    • Avoid loose slippers or socks on slippery floors.

  5. Plan Ahead

    • Keep frequently used items within reach.

    • Allow extra time so you don’t feel rushed.

    • Use mobility aids recommended by your OT, such as walking frames or walking sticks.

A Real-Life Example

John, a 68-year-old was experiencing frequent stumbles around his home. After a home safety assessment, his occupational therapist recommended grab rails in the bathroom, better lighting on his stairs, and a daily exercise program to improve balance. Within months, John felt more confident and reported fewer falls, giving him peace of mind and independence.

How Occupational Therapy Can Help

An OT can play a vital role in reducing your risk of falls by:

  • Conducting home safety assessments

  • Recommending assistive technology (e.g., shower chairs, mobility aids, personal alarms)

  • Teaching safe movement strategies

  • Collaborating with physiotherapists for strength and balance training

  • Supporting you to maintain independence and confidence
