Occupational Therapist Jill Scott is redefining therapy for children in the Shoalhaven region by blending her passion for sports with her professional expertise. As a paediatric OT at South Coast Therapy & Support Group, Jill leads the local Sense Rugby program—a unique initiative that combines rugby drills with therapeutic strategies to support children who find traditional team sports challenging.

From Therapy Room to Rugby Field

Jill’s journey into occupational therapy was driven by a desire to make a tangible difference in children’s lives. With a background in disability services, she brings a wealth of experience to her role. Her approach is characterized by creativity and fun, often incorporating activities like bike riding and games to engage her clients. This philosophy naturally extended to her involvement with Sense Rugby, where she saw an opportunity to merge her love for sports with therapeutic practice.

“Combining my love for sport and occupational therapy is very exciting,” Jill shared. “I’ve been with Shoalhaven Occupational Therapy for 3.5 years, and this project has given me new responsibilities and a chance to learn more in my career.”

Understanding Sense Rugby

Sense Rugby is an evidence-informed program designed by occupational therapists and rugby professionals. It provides a safe, supportive environment for children who may find it difficult to participate in traditional team sports. This includes kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, anxiety, sensory processing differences, learning difficulties, and emotional regulation challenges. Unlike regular sports teams, Sense Rugby emphasizes participation over performance, tailoring activities to each child’s individual needs and helping them work on therapy goals while having fun on the field.

A Community-Centered Approach

Based in Nowra and surrounding areas, the Shoalhaven Sense Rugby sessions are run by qualified therapists and passionate coaches, offering a fun and therapeutic experience for kids of all abilities. The program is NDIS registered, provides small group sessions, and focuses on building confidence, coordination, and social and emotional development. It’s run by experienced allied health professionals dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where every child can feel successful and part of a team.

Looking Ahead

Jill’s commitment to innovation in therapy continues to inspire those around her. Her work with Sense Rugby not only provides children with essential skills but also fosters a sense of belonging and achievement. As the program grows, Jill remains dedicated to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive through play and connection.
