Today our team had the opportunity to explore a range of wheelchairs and seating options with Nathan from Astris PME. These inservices are an important way for us to stay up to date with the latest assistive technology so we can recommend the most suitable equipment for our clients.

Wheelchairs Showcased

We compared several manual and power-assist options, each designed with unique features:

  • Quickie Iris

A versatile tilt-in-space wheelchair featuring Intelligent Rotation in Space (IRIS) Technology, which allows up to 55° of rotation. This is particularly beneficial for pressure management and positioning. While we viewed this chair with a power-assist option attached, it’s important to note that the Iris itself is a manual tilt-in-space frame, and power-assist is typically added as a separate system.

  • Quickie iXpress (Power-Assist Add-On)

Compatible with a range of manual chairs, including some Quickie models, the iXpress provides powered propulsion at speeds up to 6 km/h and a range of up to 16 km per charge. It helps reduce caregiver strain and can significantly increase independence for users.

  • Helio C2

A folding carbon-fibre wheelchair by Motion Composites, designed to be exceptionally lightweight and easy to propel. Transport weight for some configurations is as low as 4.3 kg, making it easier to handle for both users and carers.

  • RGK Fixed Frame

RGK is well-known for producing high-performance rigid chairs. The model we trialled was impressively lightweight and highly responsive, aimed at active users who want a chair that feels like an extension of their body. While “under 4 kg” will depend on exact configuration, RGK continues to set benchmarks in lightweight design.

Cushions Reviewed

We also explored a variety of cushions, which are critical for comfort, positioning, and pressure management:

  • Spex Classic

A modular cushion system that can be tailored for individual needs, offering excellent postural support and pressure redistribution.

  • RGK Lite Cushion

Designed for active users seeking a lighter seating solution that doesn’t compromise on comfort.

  • NXT Cushion

Part of the Motion Composites/NXT range, these cushions are focused on pressure care and posture, balancing comfort with skin protection.

Key Takeaways

  • There is no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to wheelchairs and cushions. Each product brings different benefits depending on lifestyle, physical needs, and therapy goals.

  • Advances in carbon-fibre technology mean wheelchairs are becoming lighter and more responsive, opening up greater independence for active users.

  • Cushion selection is critical to prevent pressure injuries, maintain comfort, and support functional positioning.

Why This Matters

By staying informed on the latest technology, we ensure our clients have access to the best solutions for their individual needs. Today’s session with Astris PME reinforced the importance of tailoring wheelchair and cushion recommendations to each person, balancing mobility, comfort, and health outcomes.
