Assistive technology (AT) can transform lives by enhancing independence, safety, and participation in everyday tasks. From simple aids to complex equipment, AT helps people of all ages overcome challenges related to mobility, communication, sensory needs, and daily living.

At South Coast Therapy & Support Group, our occupational therapists assess, prescribe, and support the use of assistive technology for NDIS participants and private clients.

🧠 What Is Assistive Technology?

Assistive technology refers to any device, tool, or system that helps someone do something they otherwise might find difficult. This includes:

  • Daily living aids: grab rails, jar openers, one-handed kitchen tools

  • Mobility devices: manual or power wheelchairs, mobility scooters

  • Seating and positioning: shower chairs, commodes, pressure cushions

  • Communication supports: AAC devices, visual schedules, talking buttons

  • Home modifications: ramps, stair lifts, bathroom adjustments

  • Sleep aids: electric adjustable beds, safety rails

  • Environmental controls: switches, voice-activated lights, alarms

The right AT can improve confidence, reduce care needs, and promote participation at home, work, or in the community.

🏠 AT at Home – Real-Life Examples

  • A child with sensory needs using a weighted blanket for sleep

  • A teen with autism using a visual schedule app for routines

  • An adult using a shower chair and hand-held rail to bathe independently

  • An older adult with arthritis using built-up cutlery and jar openers

  • A wheelchair user accessing a modified kitchen or bathroom safely

Each recommendation is tailored to the person’s goals, environment, and funding options.

📥 How to Access AT Through the NDIS

  1. Assessment: An OT assesses your goals, daily challenges, and environment

  2. Trial and recommendation: We explore equipment options with you and conduct trials where appropriate

  3. Quote and report: We prepare detailed documentation for AT funding requests

  4. Ordering and setup: Once approved, we help you trial, order, and use your new equipment

  5. Training and review: We ensure the technology works well and evolves with your needs

Some simple items may be able to be ordered directly from the supplier, while others require NDIS approval (especially if over $1500 or category-specific).

📥 When to Refer for AT Support

  • Your client struggles with daily tasks despite other supports

  • You’re unsure what technology might help them achieve their goals

  • AT is required for an upcoming plan review or reassessment

  • There are safety or mobility concerns at home

  • Communication or independence is limited by environment or equipment

  • You want a professional recommendation for funded AT

We work closely with clients, families, support coordinators, and providers to ensure AT is practical, approved, and effectively used.
