At South Coast Therapy & Support Group, we understand how the right tools can transform everyday life. Assistive technology (AT) includes a wide range of supports — from simple aids like grab rails or shower chairs, to complex devices like powered wheelchairs or communication devices.

What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive technology refers to any device, equipment, or system that helps someone perform tasks they may otherwise find difficult due to a disability, illness, or injury. It’s not just about high-tech gadgets — even a pencil grip or a kitchen aid can qualify as AT.

Who Benefits from Assistive Technology?

People of all ages and abilities can benefit from assistive technology. Some common uses include:

  • Improving mobility and access at home and in the community

  • Supporting daily living tasks like dressing, bathing, and cooking

  • Enhancing communication through speech-generating devices or apps

  • Increasing safety and independence with personal alarms, ramps, or fall prevention equipment

The Role of Occupational Therapists

Our OTs are trained to:

  • Conduct thorough AT assessments

  • Recommend the most suitable devices

  • Facilitate equipment trials

  • Provide detailed reports for NDIS funding applications

  • Train clients and carers in safe use of equipment

We work closely with clients and their families to ensure every solution is tailored to their goals, home environment, and lifestyle.

How to Access AT Through the NDIS

If you're an NDIS participant, AT supports may be funded under the "Assistive Technology" or "Capital Supports" categories. Our team can guide you through the process of:

  • Getting a quote

  • Completing AT assessments

  • Submitting required reports and documentation

  • Liaising with suppliers

With our support, accessing the right equipment can be simple and stress-free.
