Assistive technology

At South Coast Therapy & Support Group, we’re passionate about helping people live independently and do more of what they love. Recently, we had the pleasure of visiting the Nowra Quilters group to speak about the benefits of assistive technology (AT)—with a special focus on daily living aids that can make everyday tasks easier and more comfortable.

What Is Assistive Technology?

Assistive technology includes any equipment, tool, or device that supports a person with disability, injury, or age-related changes to carry out everyday tasks. These may be low-cost daily living aids such as long-handled reachers, jar openers, or non-slip mats, or more complex devices such as mobility scooters and electric lift chairs.

As occupational therapists, we assess each person’s unique needs and recommend practical solutions that can improve function, reduce fatigue, and enhance safety at home and in the community.

Connecting With the Nowra Quilters

Many members of the Nowra Quilters group are active, engaged older adults who may face challenges with hand strength, joint pain, or balance. Our presentation was a great opportunity to demonstrate how small changes—like using ergonomic kitchen tools, raised toilet seats, or easy-grip utensils—can have a big impact on daily life.

We discussed:

  • How daily living aids can reduce strain and improve independence

  • Simple home modifications that increase safety

  • How occupational therapists support older adults to live confidently at home

  • Funding options available through the NDIS and Home Care Packages

Supporting Independence With Daily Living Aids

At South Coast Therapy & Support Group, we support people of all ages across the Shoalhaven and Illawarra to access the right assistive technology and daily living aids for their needs. Whether it’s help with:

  • Personal care

  • Cooking and meal preparation

  • Home safety

  • Getting dressed or managing medication

…our occupational therapists are here to help.

We provide comprehensive AT assessments, assist with trials, and complete any required NDIS or aged care documentation for funding approval.

Interested in a Presentation or Assessment?

We love connecting with local groups and sharing how allied health services can make a difference. If your organisation or community group would like a guest speaker to talk about assistive technology, falls prevention, or occupational therapy supports, we’d love to hear from you.
