Language development in preschoolers is one of the most important building blocks for later learning, social connection, and school readiness. While every child develops at their own pace, there are key red flags that may indicate your child needs support from a speech pathologist.

🚩 Signs of Early Language Delay (Ages 1–5)

  • Limited babbling or word use by 18 months

  • Difficulty following simple instructions

  • Frustration when trying to communicate

  • Poor eye contact or joint attention

  • Struggles with forming sentences or using new words

These signs can be subtle and easily missed, especially in busy home environments or with children who are otherwise thriving. Early intervention is key—speech therapy during the preschool years has the most significant impact on outcomes.

🧩 Simple Language Activities to Try at Home

  • Comment more than question: Narrate play, e.g. “You’re building a big tower!”

  • Use visual supports: Point to objects while naming them.

  • Follow your child’s lead: Join their interests and label what they’re doing.

  • Books and songs: Sing familiar songs with actions and repeat the same books often.

  • Slow down: Allow pauses so children can attempt to respond or imitate.

If you're unsure whether your child’s communication is on track, a short speech pathology screening can provide clarity and peace of mind.

✅ When to Refer to a Speech Pathologist

  • Your child isn’t combining words by age 2

  • You (or others) struggle to understand them

  • They seem uninterested in communicating

  • You’ve tried home strategies without noticeable progress

  • Concerns have been raised by preschool educators or your GP
