Last week in our Life Skills Group, we had a sizzling good time learning how to make panini press hash browns — and they were a hit! From washing and grating the potatoes to shaping them and crisping them up in the panini press, everyone got involved and had fun while learning valuable skills.

Our group worked together to:

  • Plan the recipe

  • Grate and prepare the ingredients safely

  • Problem-solve how to get the perfect crisp

  • Practice turn-taking and communication

  • And of course… enjoy the delicious results!

This simple activity was more than just a snack. It was an engaging way to develop real-world abilities in a supportive, social setting.

Why Life Skills Groups Matter

Life Skills Groups offer so many benefits, especially for participants who are building independence and confidence in everyday tasks. Here are just a few reasons we love running them:

  1. Practical Learning in a Safe Space

Participants get to practice everyday activities like cooking, cleaning, budgeting, and using public transport — all while supported by experienced therapists.

  1. Social Connection

Our group sessions foster friendships, build communication skills, and give everyone a chance to work as part of a team.

  1. Confidence Building

Each task completed — whether it’s peeling a potato or using a kitchen appliance — builds a sense of accomplishment and boosts self-esteem.

  1. Goal-Oriented Progress

We tailor each session to help participants work towards their personal goals, whether it’s improving fine motor skills, following instructions, or learning to make meals independently.
