Manual wheelchairs provide essential mobility support for individuals who are unable to walk or who experience fatigue or pain when walking long distances. They are available in a range of styles, including transit wheelchairs for short trips and self-propelling wheelchairs for daily use. Some wheelchairs are lightweight and foldable, while others are custom-designed for specific physical needs.
Manual wheelchairs may be appropriate for individuals with neurological conditions, musculoskeletal conditions, or following injury or surgery. They can help reduce the risk of falls and support continued community access.
An OT assesses your strength, endurance, posture, seating position, and daily routines to determine whether a manual wheelchair is appropriate. They will also evaluate the environments you move through—your home, work, school, or the community—and recommend features to help with safety and accessibility.
At South Coast Therapy & Support Group, we work closely with clients, families, and equipment suppliers to ensure the right wheelchair is prescribed. We offer trial opportunities and complete the documentation required for NDIS or other funding applications.
