School holidays are a welcome break from the busy routines of school, homework, and extracurricular activities. But for many children, this time away from structure can also mean missed opportunities for learning and development. That’s where school holiday therapy groups come in.
At South Coast Therapy & Support Group, we run specialised Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, and Sense Rugby programs during the school holidays. These groups are designed to be fun and engaging, while also providing children with the chance to build important life skills.
1. Continued Skill Development During the Break
Children thrive on consistency. When therapy pauses for several weeks, some kids can lose momentum with their goals. Holiday groups provide a way to keep learning going in a structured but enjoyable way. Instead of therapy feeling like “work,” it’s built into exciting activities with peers.
2. Building Social Skills in Real-Life Settings
Group therapy offers opportunities that one-on-one sessions simply can’t. Children get to practice:
Turn-taking and sharing
Cooperation and teamwork
Problem-solving with peers
Communication in natural settings
For example, in our Sense Rugby program, kids learn to manage emotions, follow group instructions, and celebrate success together—all while being active and having fun.
3. Boosting Confidence and Independence
Group settings are a fantastic way for children to step outside their comfort zones. With gentle support from our therapists, they gain confidence in trying new activities, meeting new friends, and practicing skills in a safe, supportive environment. This boost in confidence often carries over into school and home life.
4. Support for Families
School holidays can be challenging for parents juggling work, routines, and keeping children engaged. Holiday groups provide families with a constructive option that not only supports their child’s development but also offers them reassurance that their child is learning and growing during the break.
5. Fun and Connection
Above all, holiday groups are fun! They combine play, therapy, and social opportunities so children don’t even realise how much progress they’re making. Many families tell us that their children look forward to holiday groups as much as a playdate or sporting activity.
