Handwriting is more than just putting pen to paper — it's a complex skill that combines fine motor coordination, visual processing, posture, and cognitive planning. At Shoalhaven Occupational Therapy, our Handwriting Group is designed to support children who are finding writing a challenge. Whether your child is just learning to write or struggling to keep up in class, we’re here to help!
In this post, we’ll share practical tips for developing handwriting at home and how to know when it's time to seek extra support.
✨ Tips for Supporting Handwriting at Home
1. Build Hand Strength Handwriting requires strong muscles in the hands and fingers. Try these fun activities:
Play with playdough – squish, roll, and pinch
Use spray bottles for watering plants
Encourage Lego building or threading beads
2. Practice Fine Motor Skills Refining finger control helps improve pencil grip and control:
Use tweezers to pick up small objects
Draw shapes in sand, shaving foam, or salt trays
Tear paper for collage art
3. Encourage Pre-Writing Patterns Before letters, kids need to master lines and shapes:
Practice drawing vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines
Use tracing books or apps
Chalk on pavement is great for large-scale practice
4. Promote Proper Posture and Pencil Grip
Feet flat on the floor, table at elbow height
Encourage a tripod pencil grip (thumb, index, and middle finger)
Use pencil grips if needed for comfort and support
5. Keep It Fun and Positive Make writing meaningful! Write cards to friends, keep a journal, or make a comic book. Short bursts of regular practice are more effective (and more fun!) than long sessions.
🚦 When to Seek Help
While every child develops at their own pace, there are some signs that may indicate your child could benefit from extra support through occupational therapy:
They avoid writing tasks or get easily frustrated
Their handwriting is hard to read or inconsistent
They struggle to form letters correctly or write on the line
Their hand tires quickly or they complain of discomfort
They're falling behind in class or avoiding homework
Our Handwriting Group offers a small, supportive environment where children can build their skills through fun, evidence-based activities. We focus on:
Fine motor development
Letter formation and spacing
Confidence with writing tasks
Core strength and posture
Visual-motor integration
