This week, our team took part in a hands-on inservice session with Astris PME, where we explored and trialled a diverse range of power assist devices designed to support and enhance independent mobility for manual wheelchair users. These technologies are reshaping how users navigate their environments—offering increased autonomy, reduced physical strain, and improved community access.
A Broad Spectrum of Power Assist Solutions
During the session, we were introduced to a comprehensive selection of power assist technologies, each suited to different user needs, clinical presentations, and environments. The inservice provided a valuable opportunity to trial these systems in real time and assess their performance. Devices explored included:
Quickie iXpress: A compact and efficient power assist system that integrates seamlessly into the wheelchair frame. Controlled via joystick, it offers discreet motorised support while maintaining the manual chair’s core functions—ideal for users looking for hybrid assistance.
Alber E-Fix: A lightweight rear-wheel-mounted system that transforms a manual wheelchair into a powered unit. Its intuitive joystick operation and portability make it especially suitable for users needing support with propulsion in daily environments.
Klaxon Klick Series: These front-mounted, quick-connect power assist units stood out for their versatility and performance. Whether navigating city streets or rougher terrain, the Klick models—including Standard Power, Race, and Power Tetra—offer scalable power and control to suit a wide range of mobility needs.
Alber Via Go: A rear-mounted drive system designed to provide consistent propulsion support, especially valuable for users managing fatigue or seeking extended mobility over longer distances or uneven surfaces.
SmartDrive MX2+: A lightweight, rear-mounted device activated by the user’s push pattern. Its Bluetooth wristband controller allows for seamless, intuitive support over long distances and challenging gradients.
Light Drive: This rear-mounted unit transforms a manual wheelchair into a joystick-controlled power chair. Offering responsive control and ease of installation, it’s ideal for users who want powered support while maintaining their existing manual frame.
Clinical Insights and Hands-On Experience
The hands-on nature of the session was incredibly valuable. It allowed our team to experience each device’s handling, attachment mechanisms, and control interfaces first-hand. The Klaxon Klick series in particular impressed with its quick docking system, agility, and terrain adaptability, making it an excellent option for active users or those exploring hybrid mobility.
Being able to trial each system reinforced the importance of personalised assessment and clinical matching when recommending power assist technology. With such a diverse range of devices, selecting the right solution depends heavily on individual goals, environments, and physical capacities.
Looking Forward
We’re grateful to Astris PME for delivering such a comprehensive and engaging session. Staying up to date with the latest mobility technology is vital to ensure we offer the most appropriate and empowering solutions for our clients.
We look forward to integrating these insights into our clinical practice, supporting clients in achieving greater independence, participation, and energy conservation in their daily lives.
