Animal walks at Sense Rugby

This week, our team had the pleasure of joining in on a lively and laughter-filled session at Sense Rugby—and what a fun arvo it was! The air was buzzing with energy as we explored a range of animal walks, from towering giraffes to sideways-crab shuffles, turning therapeutic goals into playful adventures.

What Are Animal Walks—and Why Do We Love Them?

Animal walks are more than just silly fun. These engaging movements are designed to mimic animals and help build crucial gross motor skills. Whether it’s stretching tall like a giraffe or scuttling like a crab, each movement supports the development of strength, coordination, balance, and body awareness.

For children of all abilities, especially those with sensory or motor challenges, these activities offer a dynamic way to engage both body and brain. Plus, they’re an incredible tool for emotional regulation and social connection—especially when we’re moving together as a team.

The Sense Rugby Approach

Sense Rugby combines the principles of occupational therapy with the structure and excitement of team sport. The sessions are designed to be inclusive, welcoming, and adaptive, offering a safe space where kids can thrive both physically and emotionally.

During our animal walk session, it was wonderful to see the children gaining confidence with each new movement, cheering each other on and finding their own unique rhythm. These small moments of success are what make sessions like this so impactful.

More Than Just Movement

What stood out most was how much joy and connection came through in the activities. The kids weren’t just walking like animals—they were stepping into a space where they felt empowered, seen, and supported.

At South Coast Therapy & Support Group, we’re all about harnessing the power of play to build meaningful skills. Our time at Sense Rugby was a perfect example of how therapeutic goals can be met with creativity, collaboration, and a whole lot of fun.
