If you’re an NDIS participant or a family member supporting someone on a plan, you’ll eventually go through a plan review. These reviews are an essential part of the NDIS process—but they can also feel confusing or stressful if you’re unsure what to expect. In this blog, we’ll break down what a plan review involves, when it happens, and how you can prepare to ensure the best outcomes for your ongoing support.
What Is an NDIS Plan Review?
An NDIS plan review is a formal process where the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) assesses how well your current plan is supporting your needs and achieving your goals. Based on this review, a new plan may be created with updated supports, funding, and goals.
There are different types of plan reviews:
Scheduled reviews: These typically occur every 12–24 months.
Unscheduled (early) reviews: These can be requested if your circumstances or needs have changed significantly.
Check-ins: Shorter, more informal discussions that help track progress between formal reviews.
When Does a Plan Review Happen?
Most participants will have a scheduled review before the end of their current plan. You should be contacted by the NDIS or your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to book a meeting.
Important: It’s best to start preparing for your review 8–12 weeks before your plan ends, especially if you need updated assessments, reports, or letters from your therapy team.
What to Expect During the Review Meeting
In your review, you’ll discuss:
Progress toward your current goals
Whether your goals are still relevant, or if they need updating
What supports have helped—and what hasn’t worked
Any changes in your health, living situation, or daily activities
What supports you’ll need moving forward
The review might take place in person, over the phone, or via video call. You can bring someone with you for support.
How to Prepare: 5 Key Steps
Review Your Current Goals
Check whether your current plan goals are still relevant. Think about what you’ve achieved and what still needs support.
Collect Reports and Evidence
Ask your therapy providers for:
Progress updates or summary letters
Functional assessments or reports that show how therapy is helping
Recommendations for ongoing or increased support
These documents help justify why you need continued (or adjusted) funding.
Update Your Daily Living Information
Make notes about how your daily routines, mobility, communication, or social participation have changed.
Consider New Goals
Have your needs changed? Do you want to start working, join a community group, or become more independent at home? Add new goals that reflect your current priorities.
Plan Ahead for Your Review Meeting
Have someone you trust attend with you. Bring your documents and be prepared to speak about how your supports are helping—or where there are still challenges.
Why Preparation Matters
When you’re well-prepared:
You’re more likely to receive appropriate funding
Your therapy supports can continue without interruption
You feel more confident and in control of your NDIS journey
