What to Expect from Telehealth Therapy Services

Access to quality allied health support shouldn't depend on how far you live from a clinic. Telehealth therapy has made it possible for families and individuals across the Shoalhaven, Illawarra, and regional and remote Australia to access Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology support from home.

If you're considering telehealth for the first time, here's what to expect.

What Is Telehealth Therapy?

Telehealth therapy delivers the same clinical support as an in-person session — assessment, goal-setting, therapy activities, and progress reviews — through secure video conferencing. It's not a lesser version of therapy; for many clients, it's simply a more accessible way to receive the same evidence-informed care.

Who Is Telehealth Suitable For?

Telehealth can work well for:

- Families and individuals in regional or remote areas without easy access to a local clinic

- Clients who find travel difficult due to distance, mobility, or scheduling

- Ongoing therapy check-ins once an initial in-person assessment has taken place- Parent and carer coaching sessions

- Some speech pathology and occupational therapy goals, depending on individual needs

Telehealth isn't the right fit for every person or every goal — our clinicians will discuss with you whether telehealth, in-person, or a blended approach best suits your situation.

What Happens in a Telehealth Session?

A typical telehealth session may include:

1. A check-in on progress since the last session

2. Guided activities delivered via video, often with a parent, carer, or support person assisting

3. Practical strategies and home programs to continue between sessions

4. Time for questions and goal review

What You'll Need

- A stable internet connection

- A device with camera and microphone (tablet, laptop, or computer)

- A quiet, comfortable space

- Any materials your clinician has asked you to prepare in advance
